Rear Extension, Hard Paved Courtyard & Interior Refurbishment - London E15

A mid terrace dwelling, for a single professional academic, incorporates the following key spatial enhancements :

Re configuration of the kitchen/dining area, landscaped exterior courtyard, a new bathroom space and incorporation of a work/study space.

The re designed kitchen/dining room area opens up to a low maintenance, landscaped garden. Folding doors encourage the outside garden space to intergrate with the new interior space and allows natural light/ ventilation with views out to the low this garden from the new space. This arrangement also creates the potential for inside-outside entertaining.

As well as the folding doors to the garden, roof light windows also allow natural light and ventilation deep into the space whilst a rain sensitive, remote controlled system ensures that these windows close even if left open during a sudden down pour.

The emphasis therefore in this project has been to ensure that the space is not only used for its primary function, that of food preparation and eating, but that it transcends these pragmatic uses and becomes a space to entertain guests, offers a place to sit and study or work in quiet contemplation yet engages with the outside garden, be that visually or physically. Whilst doing this the scheme allows greater well being to its occupant through improved natural lighting/ ventialtion that now reaches into the heart of a deep foot print. Something that the existing condition never could have achieved.
